What does Big Data have to do with my program???
Big data is a HUGE topic! Seriously though, many dimensions of data have grown as developing technologies provide new ways to collect, store, and display it. So what does this have to do with my program and my evaluation? What has changed, and what should I be doing differently?
- VARIETY in TYPE and TIME - As always, collection requirements become more complex in response to the multiple needs of different funding sources and the time required to collect data. If you collect data via databases you establish a complex ecosystem within the database alone! SOLUTION Think with your team about how to archive your data, what storage is available, what to store and for how long, and how you might need to access your data. Then develop a system that is secure and accessible to those who need it.
- VOLUME - As you work on your system, think about the size of all the data you want to store, use, and share. If it's too big, it will be hard to display and share. And we know that unshared data is dead data! SOLUTION Think about how you will share data, as that will limit and expand the data you do share. Want to put it in on a website, Tweet it, Facebook it? Social media and the internet have expanded the power and potential of data sharing. Different platforms or apps lend themselves to different uses and displays of data. You may need to get to the facts quickly and succinctly, highlighting compelling bits of data through a story or a data viz. How you want to share data will determine what data to share and how you format it.
- VELOCITY - Lastly, although we have just scratched the surface, think about how fast your data is growing - the speed of not only your growth but also what technology is now available for you to store and display your bigger data. SOLUTION Include periodic purging of data and a review of your PLAN for your BIG DATA! Keep it simple! Most grants require keeping data for three years. Whether storage is a problem or not, keep in mind what you really need over time and get rid of the rest. We don't want to see you on the next episode of DATA Hoarders...
After School Quality Standards?
We have been hearing about After School Quality Standards...and of course with any well established program anything to do with change strikes fear into the hearts and hard working souls of After School personnel. But not to worry, it is a QUALITY PROCESS that is now mandated by SB1221, and the new peer-created CDE Quality Standards are here to guide us.
